“Why can’t I get pregnant?” Being a woman who married at the late age of 45, a major concern that my husband and I had is if I could get pregnant, so I have this fear that this question will be foremost in my mind. From early research on the Internet, I knew that my chances of conceiving a child decreases as I grow older each year.

Specialist Can Answer Why Can’t We Get Pregnant
At first, we did not consider seeking help from a fertility specialist. Being devout Christians, having a “test tube baby” was furthest from our minds. We wanted to try to conceive the natural way by monitoring when my ovulation will occur by checking my basal body temperature every morning. Sadly, however, my menstrual cycle was very irregular, so that we could not predict ovulation and time our sexual activity during my “fertile period”.
I decided to switch to an ovulation detector kit, but even this did not prove effective. Even when the kit detected ovulation as a spike in luteinizing hormone, we remained unsuccessful. Needless to say, it caused considerable strain in our marriage. My in-laws have even suggested to my husband that the problem probably lay with me.

After three years of trying, we ultimately decided to see a fertility specialist. She advised that we should be thoroughly examined to determine where the problem exactly lay. To our surprise, both my husband and I have infertility problems which are preventing us from having a baby. I was found to have a block in both of my fallopian tubes. Even if the block did not exist, my husband has a low sperm count and poor sperm motility. After much discussion with our doctor, we decided to go for artificial insemination.
Get Pregnant By Insemination
A few months prior to the insemination, my doctor put me on fertility drugs to improve the chances of the fertilized egg implanting inside my uterus. On my husband’s part, she extracted sperm from him, and selected the best sperms from the sample. Once she detected that I was ovulating via ultrasound, she extracted eggs from my ovary and injected the sperm directly into them (a procedure called “intracytoplasmic sperm injection”). The fertilized eggs were then injected into my uterus. The first three cycles of treatment did not produce the results we desired.
Finally, on the fourth cycle, the doctor confirmed that I was indeed pregnant. Still, we did not take any chances. I did everything that my doctor ordered. I ate a healthy diet and regularly took the vitamins that she prescribed to me. My husband advised that I take a leave of absence from work, so that I will be free from stress and just be able to concentrate on my health and the baby. Of course, I consulted my doctor regularly, so that she could monitor the baby’s growth. We did have a small scare though when I experienced some bleeding during the seventh month of my pregnancy. The doctor, thankfully, reassured me that my baby was doing fine.
Our long wait came to an end when I delivered by Cesarean section a healthy baby boy weight 6.9 pounds.
