No discussion on “how to get pregnant” would be complete without a frank and open-minded discussion on sex, sexual positions and the best position to get pregnant.
Although some people may feel uncomfortable or even offended talking about it, there is no denying the fact that knowledge of sexual positions is one of the purely NATURAL ways that you can achieve pregnancy.
The Rationale Behind Sexual Positions for Pregnancy
To better understand the importance of sexual positions in achieving pregnancy, we need to review the characteristics of the sperm cells that will fertilize the mature egg that is released from the woman’s ovary during ovulation.
As you may recall from your Sex Education classes, there are two types of sperm cells – sperm that contain the X chromosome and those that have the Y chromosome. All egg cells in the woman will have the X chromosome. If the X chromosome sperm unites with the egg, you will have a baby girl. If the Y chromosome unites with the egg, you will have a baby boy. Y chromosome sperm cells are more agile and travel faster, but they have a short life span. This means, Y chromosome sperm cells need to travel a shorter distance in order to fertilize the egg. In contrast, X chromosome sperm cells move slower but have a longer life span. So, they can travel longer distances before dying and are more likely than the Y chromosome sperm cells to fertilize the egg.
What does this have to do with sexual positions? Certain sexual positions promote the deposition of specific sperm cells into the woman’s reproductive tract, making gender selection possible. For women with uterine abnormalities, sexual positions can help them to attain pregnancy.
Generally speaking, however, the best position to get pregnant is the missionary position (with the man on top) because it provides the best access to the woman’s reproductive tract. Avoid positions wherein the woman is on top, sitting or standing because gravity can cause semen and sperm to leak out.
Best Positions for Gender Selection and Uterine Problems
Couples who want to have a boy or a girl should consider their positions whenever they have intimate relations.
The best position to get pregnant with a boy is the rear entry or “doggie style” position wherein the woman is on all fours. Because of the short life span of the Y chromosome sperm cells, they need to be deposited as deep as possible into the woman’s reproductive tract. The deeper penetration allowed by the rear entry positions permits the direct deposition of the sperm on the cervical opening itself, so that the Y chromosome sperm cells don’t need to travel far to reach the egg.
In contrast, the best position to get pregnant with a girl is the missionary position. The rationale here is that the sperm cells would have a longer distance to travel. As a result, the Y chromosome sperm cells die before they reach the egg. The same could not be said for the hardier X chromosome sperm cells, which are able to traverse the longer distance to fertilize the egg.
Best position to get pregnant with a tilted uterus
Sexual positions are of great importance for women with retroverted, tilted or tipped uteri. Normally, the uterus is in an upright position. But a retroverted uterus is either tilted forwards or backwards inside the pelvis. Despite the abnormal position, fertility is not affected. However, sperm deposition can prove problematic if the right sexual positions are not performed.
The best position to get pregnant with a tilted uterus would either be rear entry or with both the woman and the man lying sideways (with the man entering her from behind). It should be mentioned that sex with a tilted uterus can be difficult and painful, so the man needs to take extra care when making love to his wife. Ironically, if pregnancy is achieved, the tilted uterus can be brought back to its normal location because of the weight of the baby.
